good afternoon. thank you for joining us. >> we're going to start with a bizarre kidnapping of a vallejo woman last week that police are calling a hoax. the deadline set by the alleged abductors of denise huskins for vallejo police to apologize after they called her a liar has come and gone. >> we have more from cornell live in vallejo. >> reporter: so far all quiet here at vallejo police department. i got to say this is one of the strange was stories we have mean? a very long time. the threat comes from an e-mail of a group claiming they kidnapped huskins last week and she's innocent of any

wrongdoing. >> i don't know when to believe. first it was a hoax. well -- and then supposedly it wasn't. >> reporter: neighbors in vallejo are per politics good a bizarre kidnapping case stranger than fiction. >> it seems weird. >> reporter: police claim the disappearance of denise huskins was nothing but a hoax. her attorney claims he's got proof his client isn't a liar and that her kidnappers are still on the loose. >> i have come to receive a 15-page single-spaced e-mail from the kidnappers. >> reporter: douglas rapoport calls it a stunning manifesto which he says of sent to "the san francisco chronicle" after huskins turned up safe last wednesday teamwork days after her boyfriend, aaron quinn reported she was abducted from their home. >> they talked very extensively about how they prepared for it, what weapons to use. >> reporter: rapoport wouldn't tell us how he got the e-mail or show us its contents. in, it the group calling themselves college educated career criminals compared themselves to the crew from

"oceans 11." >> we're set. >> we're set. >> we're set. >> do it already. >> reporter: the group claims it kidnapped huskins as a dry run so they could kidnap other high-profile people in the future. they admit huskins was the wrong target. >> they felt terribly when they discovered that it was her. yet, since this was a training mission, they decided to carry it out regardless. >> reporter: according to the e-mail they felt so badly they let her off in her hometown of huntington beach. the group won't identify themselves but feel the need to defend huskins and her boyfriend from claims by police who say they made the whole thing up. in fact, it gave police until noon today to apologize to huskins or face consequences. so far, no comment from police on the case and no apology either. rapoport is a san francisco attorney who has represented other high-profile clients including former pleasanton assemblywoman mary hyashi in a shoplifting case from 2011. in vallejo, abc7 news.

a fire that threatened homes for a time in san bernardino county is now out. the blaze broke out this afternoon this a dry riverbed in spring valley 90 miles northeast of los angeles. it quickly spread to 60 acres and burned a fence and outbuilding. authorities evacuated a handful of ranch homes in the area. but crews were able to douse the flames before they got too close. we are also see something gusty winds in the bay area as well. >> let's take a live look from our abc 7 roof cam. you see the flags blowing there in the wind. this is san francisco. spencer christian is here with the accu-weather update. yes, it's gusty out here. and the gusts probably have not reached their peak yet. in san bernardino county where the fire was, it's been gusting up around 35 miles per hour. we've got gusts that high here as well. here's a look at live doppler 7 h.d. sunny skies as you probably know across the bay area. and right now, we have gusts at sfo up to 40 miles per hour. 32 mile-per-hour gusts in concord.

30 at hayward. 28 in san carlos. quite windy now. the pattern will continue into the overnight hours. blue skies over the bay as we look over san francisco. 60 now in san francisco. 67 in oakland. san carlo morgan hill 67. 57 at half moon bay. check out the blue skies over sfo. under windy conditions, of course. it's 70 degrees in santa rosa. napa 69. petaluma, 68. 7 at fairfield. 74 apiece in concord and limp. the golden gate bridge, traffic is flowing nicely. skies are blue, and here's our first forecast. we'll see windy and cool conditions this evening. it will be bright and breezy early tomorrow morning. a little chilly in the north bay valleys where lows will drop to around 39 to 40 degrees in spots. sunny and breezy again tomorrow highs in the upper 50s tat the coast to low 50s inland.

more coming up in a few minutes. >> thank you very much. police in vallejo are trying to determine if a driver is to blame for hitting and killing a pedestrian this morning. happened around 6:00 at marin street. a 23-year-old woman died at the scene. the driver stopped and is cooperating with authorities. police are investigating if the woman killed was in the crosswalk at the time. a big mess in fremont this morning. sky 7 h.d. was overhead shortly after a tractor-trailer loaded with scrap metal overturned on mission boulevard near stevenson boulevard. this was about 10:30 this morning. police shut down mission from walnut avenue to stevenson for several hours to investigate why the truck tipped over. and of course to clean up the big mess. the driver was injured but not seriously. sky 7 h.d. was over 8th and harrison streets in san francisco where more than a dozen police and chp officers responded to the call of an officer down just before noon. turns out fortunately there was no shooting or attack. the officer driving the patrol car collided with another vehicle in the intersection. and dispatch couldn't reach them

for a while. emergency crews took the officer to the hospital with unknown injuries. the man driving the other car stayed with police to give his account of what happened. sfpd is investigating which driver had the right of way. san jose police have finalized the procession route for thursday's funeral for officer michael johnson who was killed in the line of duty. >> there were several road closures along the route. officer johnson's body will leave the funeral home in los gatos at 10:00 a.m. >> it will head up winchester and turn on stephens creek boulevard for ending with a public memorial at 11:00 which we expect to be well attended. we'll have live coverage on abc7 news of the thursday memorial, and we'll be streaming it on line at abc7news.com, as well. now to the growing fallout over that religious freedom law in indiana. >> this afternoon, there's been even more pushback stretching from the bay area all the way to the hoosier state. >> "the indianapolis star" made this bold statement today. you see the headline for yourself "fix this now!"

>> abc news' marcy gonzalez is following the story live from new york with more. >> reporter: the governor of indiana says there's a major misperception and that the law doesn't allow for discrimination, though he admits the wording of the law needs to be changed. today indiana's governor vowing to fix the religious freedom act which opponents say legalizes discrimination by protecting business owners allowing them to turn away gays lesbians, and other customer its they feel serving them infringes on their religious beliefs. >> would be helpful to move legislation this week that makes it clear that this law does not give businesses a right to deny services to anyone. >> no hate in our state! >> reporter: the law leading to protests -- >> we're absolutely not okay with it. >> reporter: -- and boycotts. connecticut, washington state, now new york banning

taxpayer-funded travel to indiana. ahead of the final four college tournament in indianapolis this weekend, the ncaa headquartered in indiana is reconsidering its long-term investment there. >> we have to say, all right, what are we going to do if this law goes into effect in july. >> reporter: some indiana democrats say the governor's plan to clarify the law's wording falls short of meeting demands to fix this now. >> the most clear, decisive and understandable thing we can do is to repeal the statute. >> reporter: we're told tonight indiana lawmakers are working on rewriting wording for that law. live in new york marcy gonzalez abc7 news. >> thank you. levi's and gap are taking aim at the indiana law. the san francisco-based companies issued a rare joint statement saying they are "calling on retail and apparel companies and other businesses to join us in speaking out

against legalized discrimination." the statement goes on to say that both companies "proud to say we're open to business for everyone." a final note -- on one final note, rather on, this. usc threatic director and player pat hayden tweeted, "i am the proud father of a gay son. in his honor i will not attend the college football playoff kmeeg meeting-- committee meeting this week. #diversity." foul smelling drinking water on the east bay should be gone by the end of the week. the sour tapwater is running through homes and businesses of east bay mud customers. the company has received more than 300 complaints in the last week. officials say the water is perfectly safe to drink. it just may taste a little different. >> we've been hearing there's a metallic taste that are not used to or an earthy taste. the reason has to do with a change we made in the way we operate our reservoir. >> california law requires east bay mud to release enough cold

water each year so salmon can spawn. because of the drought there's not enough to go around. as a result, east bay mud had to pull water from a sunnier algae-filled section of its reservoir in the sierra foothills. east bay mud began drawing water from deeper in the reservoir again yesterday. the smelly water should go away pretty soon. two san francisco bars are trying to help beat the drought. bond bar in the mission and wish bar and flounchlg smael are offer -- in soma are offering discount to customers who order drinks without ice. now through easter, beer wine and hard liquor are a dollar off. here at 4:00 east bay parents push to save their preschool. an important meeting about to get underway. and does it pay to use apple pay? early adopters of the service weigh in. new at 4:30, a major development in that germanwings plane crash. the chilling evidence that may have been found at the scene of the wreckage. taking a live look at our traffic at 4:10 on this tuesday

space for preschoolers has been nearly impossible. >> very example, we'd have to make classrooms put some natural lighting in, windows, skylights. commercial kitchen, office space. >> that's money they don't have. parents are worried that if the preschool closes, they won't have a place to go. >> with low-income families, they can't afford that. it's already hard as it is to like get kids to come here out of their work schedule. >> reporter: parents aren't ready to give up yet. tomorrow they'll hold a making to try to get the community involved. in antioch abc7 news. facebook today launched a scrapbook feature to help parents tag and save photos of their children in one place. here's how it works -- parents add a child to their profile and indicate up to two facebook members who are that child's

parents. they can then tag their child in photos which will show up in both parents' timelines and stored in one centralized stroob. easy to find. friends and family can subscribe to a child's scrapbook, privacy set regulars the same for any album. the feature also works, by the way, for pets. the apple pay isn't paying off with many who have tried it. a survey shows 2/3 of those who used the smartphone payment system have had trouble using it at the check yount counter. another 48% said they used the service only once and won't use it again because it took too long and recorded inaccurate amounts. they also said clerks weren't really able to provide help. some 3,000 people participated in the marketing survey. all were iphone 6 or iphone 6-plus users. we ails learn today apple has received a patent for using facial recognition software to unlock mobile devices. one day you may just have to pose for a selfie to get access to your phone. on to some health news. ficial oil is widely used as a

dietary supplement. does it really work? >> and forget the doctor -- an apple away may help keep the pharmacist away. here's jane king with our health and wellness report. >> reporter: at least 10% of americans take fish oil supplement. most believe the omega 3 fatty acids will protect their heart. there is one big problem -- "the new york times" says the vast majority of clinical trials involving fish oil have found no evidence it lowers the risk of heart attack or stroke. can switching to organic fruit and vegetables double sperm count? harvard scientists say pesticides on produce may damage sperm quantity and quality. they found those men who ate produce with no residue saw their sperm quality increase by 37%. an apple a day may not keep the doctor away, but it might help keep the pharmacist at bay. the university of michigan says apple eaters did appear to be significantly more likely to avoid prescription medications. curiously, the link was stronger for people who consumed small or medium-sized apple than for

they will start up wind gust animation at 7:00 this evening at which point we'll see winds gusting over 35 miles per hour in coastal areas. 25 in san francisco. 24 in oakland and san jose. in the early morning hours tomorrow we'll still have strong gusty winds in most locations near the coast. notice inland spots like napa and san jose will have relatively light winds at that time. generally it will still be windy, gusty across the bay area. by 3:00 tomorrow afternoon similar pattern. gusts on the coast over 30 miles per hour in most coastal locations. anywhere from 15 to 20 miles per hour around the bay. we'll go to the weekend. we may get a little easter rain starting the forecast animation friday. notice showers getting closer on saturday. finally on easter sunday looks like a chance of showers now. bear that in mind. we'll keep watching. it may change. overnight, clear skies tonight. breezy to windy, especially near the coast. we'll have low temperatures mainly in the upper 30s around 40 in the north bay valleys.

a staple of abc's daytime lineup leads the pack in the daytime emmy awards. "general hospital" received 28 nominations including lead actor, actress, and best drama. "live with kelly and michael" was nominated for top entertainment talk show. kelly and michael themselves are nominated for best hoechting honors. -- hosting honors. today the latest celebrity to get booted off "dancing with the stars" is responding to a controversial remark made by one of the judges, actress and model charlotte mckinney. the second celebrity to go. she says she did her best and enjoyed the experience. the carl's jr. model was all smiles until "dancing with the stars" judge bruno tonioli gave his two cents.

here are your headlines at 4:30. the attorney for a vallejo woman who claims she was abducted said he has an e-mail from the kidnap force back up her story. denise husk in'boyfriend reported her abduction march 23rd. police led an extensive search

but couldn't find her. she turned up safe two days later in southern california. police called the abduction a hoax. the attorney claims a 15-page e-mail from the kidnappers says the kidnapping was real and they demand an apology from police. there's more backlash against indiana for a law that's been called discriminatory against the gay community. carolyn tyler tweeted, "levi's is the latest company to denounce indiana's religious freedom law calling it legalized discrimination." coming up at 5:00 we look t stance against the law taken by the city of san francisco. a pedestrian was killed in vallejo today. tiffany wilson tweeted "flare is still visible after a 23-year-old pedestrian struck by a car." locals say, this is a bad crossing. we talk with a close friend coming up at 5:00. fire rips through four homes under construction in dublin late last night. today, investigators say the fire may be suspicious. abc 7 has details. >> reporter: firefighters were back at the scene this morning

to put out hot spots. four single-family homes sitting next to each other were destroyed last night here at the jordan ranch preserve in dublin. >> other than the actual construction work that was going on, there are no other reasons that it should have started. we are looking at it as being possibly suspicious. >> reporter: the two-story homes were in the framing stage and burned intensely. crews admittedly got lost trying to find the exact loikz in this new subdivision but worked quickly to contain the two-alarm fire. >> the wind was blowing away from the adjacent structures. otherwise we could have had more structures threatened. >> i was concerned, worried about my house and my family. >> reporter: new reduction in dublin -- construction in dublin is a common sight. not everyone here is a fan of the massive growth as seen by the failure of measure t last fall that would have allowed for more development. >> there's not much space between the houses, as well.

i think it's more aggressive than needed. >> reporter: anti-growth sentiments prompted rumors that this fire could be all the more suspicious. >> what would have happened if this was summer? right, if it was over 100 degrees? >> reporter: others say they moved here because it's an up and coming area. >> it attracted us to the area. so we are excited, yeah. >> reporter: for now, fire investigators are working with alameda sheriff's office to find out where and how the fire started. fire investigators have been working through the night. they are interviewing project managers and workers. meantime developers are waiting to get the clear to start rebuilding. in dublin, abc7 news. multiple reports today say cell phone video found in the wreckage of the germanwings plane that crashed into a french mountainside shows the final moments before impact. a police spokesman is denying that that video exists. meanwhile, the co-pilot accused of taking the plane down apparently had a history of depression. lufthanza says andreas lubitz informed his flight school in

2009 that he had a "serious depressive episode." the information was found in emails sent to the flight school after he resumed his training. the airline says it has provided the documents to prosecutors. lufthanza is canceling celebrations for its 60th anniversary in the wake of last week's germanwings crash in the french alps. the german airline declined a long list of festivities on april 15th to mark its refounding a decade after the end of world war ii. instead, lufthanza will broadcast a memorial service for victims of the airline's worst-ever crash. 149 people were killed when the flight from barcelona to dusseldorf crashed shortly after takeoff. chaos in downtown fresno today after an armed man walked into a medical office shooting as he entered, killing one woman before killing himself. fresno police say the 43-year-old woman and 34-year-old woman were in a romantic relationship. it started around 11:00 a.m. witnesses say the man walked into the medical clinic shooting guns in the air. those inside hid in bathrooms

and climbed out winds to escape with the help of police. officers evacuated city hall and several nearby businesses. they discovered the dead man and woman during a search of the building. no one else was hurt. an escaped robbery suspect armed with a gun in virginia is now back in custody after a long search today. abc news reporter karen travers has details. >> reporter: a nearly nine-hour manhunt is over. the suspect was arrested without incident late this morning. the fugitive launched a massive search was riding a d.c. bus when a passenger recognized him and called police. >> an alert community member identified him through all the social media outlets where we put our message out and called the metropolitan police department. and then mr. sayer was arrested by the metropolitan police. >> reporter: the situation began early this morning. authorities say the suspected bank robber was being transferred from jail to inova fairfax hospital about ten

miles outside of washington, d.c. he was in the custody of private security guards but managed to overpower them and steal one of their guns. >> at 3:00 this morning he got into a struggle with one of the security guards. and a round was discharged from the security guard's weapon. >> reporter: police tweeted this image of him saying "he's wearing a hospital gown and no shoes and armed with a gun." he carjacked two different vehicles during his escape. he broke into the trunk of the first car and hid there until the owner drove to work. >> while commuting to work in the area of the hospital, mr. sayer started to kick out the back seat from inside the trunk. the vehicle then crashed and he then committed a carjacking. >> reporter: he was arrested in connection with a bank robbery. he's believed to be involved in a string of about a dozen bank robberies in northern virginia. >> this is the suspect that robbed the banks in the region using a bicycle. >> reporter: law enforcement sources tell abc news the reason

he was transferred to the hospital was because he attempted suicide last friday after he was arrested. karen travers, abc news, washington. new at 4:30, nuclear talks involving iran and six other world powers including the united states will continue past the midnight deadline. secretary of state john kerry planned to leave the talks today. but he will remain until tomorrow. a state department spokesman said there's been enough progress to justify the extension. the talks are aimed at curbing iran's nuclear program. back at home all lanes of southbound 680 in santa clara county are open in time for the evening commute after a six-car accident after 11:00 this morning. sky 7 h.d. was over the scene in milpitas. the chp says a lumber truck's load was unstable and tipped over. the collision flipped an suv and caused other cars to collide. there was one minor injury. san francisco officials hope relaunching the police department's cadet academy will inspire the next generation to join the force. the new cadet academy each year

new details a wild scene in fairfax county virginia this morning that had one very determined suspect trying to get away from police. inside this silver truck a woman wanted for credit card theft, forgery and other charges was driving -- look at that -- crazy. she dodge traffic with a fleet of patrol cars on her tail. eventually runs into traffic makes a few quick moves to get around it. officers move in clipped the back of her truck sent her spinning. when it looks like they've got her, though, she spins away. starts to take off again eluding the police more than once. she is eventually stopped but won't get out of the truck. officers bust her window. she's finally taken into custody. now for a live look at our traffic here nothing that

the financial security index is at the second highest since bank rate started keeping track in 2010. 27% feel more secure about their jobs today than a year ago. that's twice as many as those who feel less secure. 29% say the financial security has improved from a year ago. 18% say it's worse. despite this, nearly half are only saving 5% or less of their monthly income. bank rate recommends you set aside 15% every month for savings. and you may not be surprised to learn that overall the younger you are, the less likely you are to set anything aside for savings each and every month. financial experts stress that now is the time to save. when you have a job and feel financially secure. 100 students from hill college and schools under the corinthian umbrella are refusing to pay loans trying to pressure the education department to forgive their debts after allegations arose against corrine than of falsifying job

join us for abc7 news at 11:00. you may want to think twice before grabbing that cell phone or reaching for a snack while behind the wheel. this morning, san francisco police and the california highway patrol announced they are stepping up enforcement against distracted drivers. a big problem. 40% of drivers surveyed admitted to texting while driving. in 2013, 424,000 people nationwide were injured in a collision involving a distracted driver. drivers were asked to fight the urge to use their phones. >> it's not that long ago we didn't have cell phones and we can do this. we can get from point a to point b without having to be distracted and keep everybody safer. >> officers won't just be looking for people talking or texting. drivers eating tuning the room, grooming, or checking a map may be ticketed. more electric vehicle charging stations are popping up throughout the bay area. tesla, in fact, announced the completion of some new super chargers today. few exist in apartment

complexes. that is all about to change, though. abc has more live from san luis. >> reporter: the lack of charging stations may be causing some apartment dwellers to say i don't need electric vehicles, it's not going to be streent charge. and some -- be convenient to charge. and some property owners say the costs may be a prohibitive factor. the hurdles have been set aside. an estimated 90% of electric and plug-in hybrids are owned by people living in single-family homes where they can wildfire up their own charging stations. twliel are public charging stations at grocery stores, shopping centers and some businesses, it's not as convenient for apartment dwellers. >> without the chargers there's no reason for them to get a plug-in hybrid or electric car. that definitely is holding them back. >> reporter: energy ev go is a o a campaign to change that, to overcome resistance by apartment managers when tenants ask for them. >> if i'm a resident in a building and want an electric vehicle charger, i have to rely

on my landlord deciding to make that investment. >> reporter: the company is covering the roughly $30,000 cost of wiring ten stalls such as this in downtown san jose. >> we don't want someone to look at the building and say i'm going to put in one charger and that will serve my drivers. in reality, nobody wants to come home at 6:00 p.m. park their car and move it again at 10:00 p.m. for their neighbors so they can charge. >> reporter: the program is called take charge c.a.narg ev go will host special events april 18 and 19 for tenants to sign up. nrg talk us to talk to building managers. the apartment charging station vs. been a major selling point. >> not only our current tenants but for people coming to lease from us. they came in looking specifically to have a charging station here within their homes. >> reporter: the program runs for two months. the goal is to see 10,000 new chargers installed. in san jose abc7 news.

>> i'm cheryl jennings. thank you very much for joining us. the vallejo fire department captain said that that young woman had been out jogging when the accident happened this morning. she was crossing curtola parkway at the intersection where a young bottom was killed less than five years ago. abc 7's tiffany wilson joins us from san jose with the sad story. tiffany? >> reporter: the coroner identified the victim as 23-year-old rita cavalero. friends say she dreamed of becoming a nurse and just yesterday got a phone call from a hospital about having an interview there. five weeks ago rita cavalero moved in with jeannette norton. this morning, she grabbed her running shoes and set off for the waterfront. emergency vehicles arrived soon after. >> i signed commotion. i didn't know it was her. >> reporter: police say a silver sedan hit the 23-year-old. the impact sent her body flying like she had wings. when norton realized her friend
